5 13er's Training Day

Had a great day climbing five 13,000 foot peaks near Empire, Colorado with my brother Rob. This is a beautiful cirque that is capped by Woods (12,940 ft), Parnassus (13,574 ft), Bard (13,641 ft), Robeson (13,140 ft), and Engelmann (13,362 ft). Ok, Woods isn't quite 13 but it's close enough.

    Hi Jeff,
It sounds like you are doing well with your training and must be in good shape. Keep up the good work. I’ve found that people respond differently to various types of training, so I’ll talk in general terms and share what works for me.

On the weekend try to get out hiking, climbing, skinning for at least 3 hours one day and then some other aerobic activity for about 1.5 hours. I prefer rollerblading with poles, mtn biking, or on mountain skiing. Basically, pick something you enjoy that will get your heart pumping.

During the week I try to lift 2 days and do cardio 2 days. If I need an extra rest day, I’ll skip one of the lifting sessions. For the cardio, on one day, I like to go at a good pace for an hour on the stair master, trying to work at about 80% of your anaerobic threshold, do some core and then leg extensions and leg curls. That is a hard day and its good to have a rest day the day before. On the other cardio day, I like to do intervals on the stationary bike for a half hour then core and step ups and bungee squats.

I will post a page with more details in the near future but hope this helps for now.

    Jim/Marolt Bros,

Speaking of training, I am headed to Denali this May to attempt a ski descent of the West Buttress. Any thoughts on training? I usually stick to at least a half hour of interval training on the stair-master and powerlifting exercises 3 days on with 1 day off continuously. My weekends usually consist of climbing mountains in the North East USA.I plan to skin/ski as much as possible this winter (hopefully 40 days or so this season before May). Any suggestions would be great.
